This document lists fully shielded
low-pressure sodium
lighting fixtures. There is no implied endorsement of any of these
products. Manufacturers carrying these products are:
Note: Products only with adjustable mounts or knuckles, such as illustrated here above, are not included. Even though such products sometimes can be adjusted to achieve full shielding, they rarely are, and because of the adjustable nature have proven to be very difficult to enforce under lighting codes that require full shielding. Products available with a variety of internal or external shields as options (sometimes even called "FS" or similar) are not listed here unless the option provides true full shielding (most do not).
Please note that the availability of products in LPS lines as in other product lines frequently changes. In addition there is the usual revision and re-shuffling of documents on the web. Anyone noting errors or omissions in the products listed below, or broken links, is encouraged to contact the author.
Low-pressure sodium lighting is often disparaged by lighting designers and specifiers, particularly in the U.S. It is nonetheless still encouraged or required in some lighting codes, particularly those near professional astronomical observatories, in communities especially concerned about energy use in outdoor lighting, or communities concerned about impacts of night lighting on wildlife (particularly sea turtles). For those interested in a balanced assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of LPS and other light sources, see the IDA Outdoor Lighting Code Handbook Section 4.10 What Types of Lighting Are Used in Outdoor Lighting?
For those interested in the issues of light source spectral distribution and visibility at low lighting levels, see the IDA Outdoor Lighting Code Handbook Section 4.11 Lighting and the Eye.
